I read this, and got very angry.
I particularly like the quote from Sir Ken Macdonald, no less, former head of the DPP.

Two things wrong with this. First, why the hell do we need yet another database of personal information - for what (genuine) purpose exactly? Secondly, why once again hand it to a private company when we all know how they screw things up and habitually mislay memory sticks, discs etc containing all this "confidential" data?
ID cards and a database of all our communications are only of any use to a totalitarian state. They will not stop criminals or terrorists at all.
Just say no.
